Stålhane began studying the art of ceramics at the Rörstrand Porcelain Factory in 1939 and after passing various work tests, he was employed by Rörstrand to paint faience. At Rörstrand he also assisted the renowned artist Isaac Grünewald who produced unique hand-painted artware for Rörstrand. Together the two artists created a variety of unique painted vases, bowls, and dishes during the 1940s.
In the latter half of the 1940s, Stålhane continued his studies abroad but soon returned to Rörstrand where he began working with more of a classic stoneware with Chinese influence. He later replaced Gunnar Nylund as the artistic director.
